Há uma guerra que se está a travar mesmo nas barbas dos Estados Unidos e quase não tem cobertura mediática.
Desde 2006 já fez mais de 28 mil mortos. 35 jornalistas foram mortos ou desapareceram.

Isso leva a que os jornalistas se imponham uma auto-censura, que só deixa filtrar os casos mais escabrosos - como o da semana passada, em que foram descobertos os corpos de 72 imigrantes clandestinos, aparentemente mortos pelos narcotraficantes por se recusarem a integrar as suas fileiras.

Mas de há seis meses para cá, surgiu El Blog del Narco (http://www.blogdelnarco.com/), que acompanha a guerra do narcotráfico, na maioria das vezes com imagens e informações inéditas.
Claro que não é conhecida a identidade do seu autor. Diz-se que se trata de um jovem de vinte e poucos anos. Mas para quem queira ter mais informação que a institucional sobre o que hoje se passa nesta guerra que envolve não só o México como toda a Améria Central, El Blog del Narco é uma fonte preciosa.

O próximo Inverno vai ser frio, garantem o "Old Farmers' Almanach" e o "Farmers' Almanach". Não, diz o Centro Nacional de Metereologia dos Estados Unidos. Os almanaques, que se publicam há mais de dois séculos, continuam a afirmar que as suas previsões são 85% correctas ao longo dos anos - coisa que o NOAA nem de longe pode afirmar.

Sendo toda a vida na Arábia Saudita controlada pelos rigores do Corão, que uma polícia especializada faz com que sejam respeitados, causou estranheza a transmissão deste anúncio no espaço publicitário do canal 1 da televisão estatal local:

Pelo menos para os americanos, existe um limiar monetário que define a felicidade: um rendimento de 75 mil dólares por ano. Atingido esse patamar, a felicidade está garantida para a maioria dos americanos; acima dele, é praticamente irrelevante.
Segundo um estudo da Woodrow Wilson School da Princeton University, quanto mais abaixo está dos 75 mil dólares anuais o rendimento de um americano, mais infeliz ele se sente.
Para se relativizar este estudo em relação ao resto do mundo, é preciso estabelecermos um parâmetro - não da riqueza, mas sim da pobreza. Nos Estados Unidos, oficialmente, é pobre qualquer família de quatro elementos que tenha um rendimento anual inferior a 22.050 dólares. E os estudo mostra que as famílias que têm rendimentos abaixo desse limiar - rendimentos que não lhes permitem garantir as pequenas coisas que contribuem para o estado de felicidade, como poder jantar fora com amigos ou ir ao cinema - se sentem mais stressadas e tristes que as que, por exemplo, têm pelo menos o dobro desse rendimento mínimo.
É interessante que o estudo mostra também que a felicidade dos americanos está ligada também a padrões de comparação. Se uma família tem um rendimento superior ao dos vizinhos, sente-se por isso mais feliz. Também se o rendimento da família tiver um crescimento anual sustentado - de 10%, segundo o estudo - esse crescimento contribui para o aumento da felicidade.
Continua a ser certo que o dinheiro não traz a felicidade - quer dizer, pelo menos para os americanos, o que venha acima dos 75 mil dólares anuais não contribui para a felicidade...

Consumer Watchdog contra Google

The public advocacy group Consumer Watchdog is no lover of Google.
It has in fact been a constant thorn in the search giant's side and has set up a special Google website to log and monitor what it sees as its misdeeds as the firm tracks and collects data on us through our search history and browsing habits.
Now Consumer Watchdog has taken it to a whole new level with giant adverts playing on the JumboTron in New York's Times Square.

Consumer Watchdog's president Jaimie Court said the aim of the adverts was to "make the public aware of how out of touch Schmidt and Google are when it comes to our privacy rights. Google knows more about us than most government agencies."
"Google's motto is 'don't be evil' and the way Eric Schmidt has been talking lately proves he has not been living up to that standard."
Specifically Mr Court is referring to Mr Schmidt's recent comments about privacy and online behaviour.
"Schmidt is out of control," said Mr Court.
"When questioned about privacy, he has said, 'If you have something that you don't want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn't be doing it in the first place.' Recently, he suggested children could change their names when they got older if they wanted to escape what was embarrassing and public in their online lives."
As well as deriding Google and its CEO in this 540ft video screen in one of America's most populous squares, Consumer Watchdog has a serious message about online privacy in general. It wants Congress to implement a "do not track me" list that prevents Google and any other internet company from tracking users' every move online.
The list would work just like the "do not call list" which has been pretty successful at stopping those annoying marketing phone calls you get just as you are about to sit down for dinner/put the baby in the bath/read the toddler a book/or enjoy a sip of wine.
Google has taken quite a bit of heat lately over privacy. Its own admission that its Street View cars had mistakenly collected snippets of information leaking from unprotected networks in people's homes resulted in criticism from privacy advocates around the world.
Google's foray into social networking with its product Buzz also lead to unwanted headlines about a cavalier attitude towards privacy.
But as the Wall Street Journal points out, Consumer Watchdog is not above reproach. The group claimed that the Street view cars could have collected national security information from members of Congress but the Journal pointed out that it made the "allegations after sitting outside the homes of the members itself and sniffing for unsecured traffic".
Google's response to the advert is sanguine.
"We like ice cream as much as anyone, but we like privacy even more," Google said in response to the BBC.
"That's why we provide tools for users to control their privacy online, like Google Dashboard, Ads Preference Manager, Chrome incognito mode and 'off the record' Gmail chat."
The California-based internet Titan said that information about its privacy tools can be found online at google.com/privacy.

LONDON – The opaque visor of one of Britain's most famous helmets has been lifted.
The identity of The Stig, the always-anonymous test driver on the popular television show "Top Gear," has long been a closely guarded secret. On Wednesday, lawyers said the BBC had been refused an injunction blocking publication of a book revealing the identity of the character.
Shortly after, publishers HarperCollins said in a statement that a 33-year-old racing driver named Ben Collins "has a great story to tell about his seven years as The Stig, which will appeal to a wide audience beyond just motoring enthusiasts."
Calling it a "victory for freedom of speech," HarperCollins said the book will be published in Britain on Sept. 16.

Stephen Hawking: God was not needed to create the Universe

The Big Bang was the result of the inevitable laws of physics and did not need God to spark the creation of the Universe, Stephen Hawking has concluded.
In his latest book, The Grand Design, an extract of which is published in Eureka magazine in The Times, Hawking said: “Because there is a law such as gravity, the Universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the Universe exists, why we exist.”
He added: “It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the Universe going.”
In A Brief History of Time, Prof Hawking's most famous work, he did not dismiss the possibility that God had a hand in the creation of the world.
He wrote in the 1988 book: "If we discover a complete theory, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason — for then we should know the mind of God.”
In his new book he rejects Sir Isaac Newton's theory that the Universe did not spontaneously begin to form but was set in motion by God.
In June this year Prof Hawking told a Channel 4 series that he didn't believe that a "personal" God existed. He told Genius of Britain: "The question is: is the way the universe began chosen by God for reasons we can't understand, or was it determined by a law of science? I believe the second. If you like, you can call the laws of science 'God', but it wouldn't be a personal God that you could meet, and ask questions."
Until his retirement last year Prof Hawking was Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, a post previously held by Newton.
The book, co-written by American physicist Leonard Mlodinow, is published on September 9.

James Lee foi despertado pela "Verdade inconveniente" de Al Gore para a destruição do planeta pela humanidade. Alguma coisa tinha que ser feita e ele achava que um canal como o Discovery tinha a obrigação de educar os humanos sobre as barbaridades que estavam a cometer.
Fez mesmo este vídeo como introdutório para essa espécie de programas.

Como todos sabem, os programadores televisivos são todos uns maus. Não o receberam nem o ouviram.
Lee decidiu que tinha que agir.
Pegou em armas e tomou de assalto o átrio de entrada da sede do Discovery, fazendo alguns reféns.

commitment to save the planet and to do the following

1. The Discovery Channel and it's affiliate channels MUST have daily television programs at prime time slots based on Daniel Quinn's "My Ishmael" pages 207-212 where solutions to save the planet would be done in the same way as the Industrial Revolution was done, by people building on each other's inventive ideas. Focus must be given on how people can live WITHOUT giving birth to more filthy human children since those new additions continue pollution and are pollution. A game show format
contest would be in order. Perhaps also forums of leading scientists who understand and agree with the Malthus-Darwin science and the problem of human overpopulation. Do both. Do all until something WORKS and the natural world starts improving and human civilization building STOPS and is reversed! MAKE IT INTERESTING SO PEOPLE WATCH AND APPLY SOLUTIONS!!!!
2. All programs on Discovery Health-TLC must stop encouraging the birth of any more parasitic human infants and the false heroics behind those actions. 7. Develop shows that mention the Malthusian sciences about how food production leads to the overpopulation of the Human race. Talk about Evolution. Talk about Malthus and Darwin until it sinks into the stupid people's brains until they get it!!
8. Saving the Planet means saving what's left of the non-human Wildlife by decreasing the Human population. That means stopping the human race from breeding any more disgusting human babies!

9. Develop shows that will correct and dismantle the dangerous US world economy. Find solutions for their disasterous Ponzi-Casino economy before they take the world to another nuclear war.

The world needs TV shows that DEVELOP solutions to the problems that humans are causing, not stupify the people into destroying the world. Not encouraging them to breed more environmentally harmful humans.
Saving the environment and the remaning species diversity of the planet is now your mindset. Nothing is more important than saving them. The Lions, Tigers, Giraffes, Elephants, Froggies, Turtles, Apes, Raccoons, Beetles, Ants, Sharks, Bears, and, of course, the Squirrels.
The humans? The planet does not need humans.
You MUST KNOW the human population is behind all the pollution and problems in the world, and YET you encourage the exact opposite instead of discouraging human growth and procreation. Surely you MUST ALREADY KNOW this!

Why Do Heavy Drinkers Outlive Nondrinkers?

One of the most contentious issues in the vast literature about alcohol consumption has been the consistent finding that those who don't drink actually tend to die sooner than those who do. The standard Alcoholics Anonymous explanation for this finding is that many of those who show up as abstainers in such research are actually former hard-core drunks who had already incurred health problems associated with drinking.
But a new paper in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research suggests that — for reasons that aren't entirely clear — abstaining from alcohol does actually tend to increase one's risk of dying even when you exclude former drinkers. The most shocking part? Abstainers' mortality rates are higher than those of heavy drinkers.
Moderate drinking, which is defined as one to three drinks per day, is associated with the lowest mortality rates in alcohol studies. Moderate alcohol use (especially when the beverage of choice is red wine) is thought to improve heart health, circulation and sociability, which can be important because people who are isolated don't have as many family members and friends who can notice and help treat health problems.
But why would abstaining from alcohol lead to a shorter life? It's true that those who abstain from alcohol tend to be from lower socioeconomic classes, since drinking can be expensive. And people of lower socioeconomic status have more life stressors — job and child-care worries that might not only keep them from the bottle but also cause stress-related illnesses over long periods. (They also don't get the stress-reducing benefits of a drink or two after work.)
But even after controlling for nearly all imaginable variables — socioeconomic status, level of physical activity, number of close friends, quality of social support and so on — the researchers (a six-member team led by psychologist Charles Holahan of the University of Texas at Austin) found that over a 20-year period, mortality rates were highest for those who had never been drinkers, second-highest for heavy drinkers and lowest for moderate drinkers.
The sample of those who were studied included individuals between ages 55 and 65 who had had any kind of outpatient care in the previous three years. The 1,824 participants were followed for 20 years. One drawback of the sample: a disproportionate number, 63%, were men. Just over 69% of the never-drinkers died during the 20 years, 60% of the heavy drinkers died and only 41% of moderate drinkers died.
These are remarkable statistics. Even though heavy drinking is associated with higher risk for cirrhosis and several types of cancer (particularly cancers in the mouth and esophagus), heavy drinkers are less likely to die than people who have never drunk. One important reason is that alcohol lubricates so many social interactions, and social interactions are vital for maintaining mental and physical health. As I pointed out last year, nondrinkers show greater signs of depression than those who allow themselves to join the party.
The authors of the new paper are careful to note that even if drinking is associated with longer life, it can be dangerous: it can impair your memory severely and it can lead to nonlethal falls and other mishaps (like, say, cheating on your spouse in a drunken haze) that can screw up your life. There's also the dependency issue: if you become addicted to alcohol, you may spend a long time trying to get off the bottle.
That said, the new study provides the strongest evidence yet that moderate drinking is not only fun but good for you. So make mine a double.

(Reuters) - A toilet that belonged to late Beatle John Lennon fetched 9,500 pounds ($14,740) at auction on Saturday, around 10 times its estimate, the sale organizers said.
Lennon, who was murdered in New York in 1980, had the porcelain lavatory removed from Tittenhurst Park in Berkshire, southern England, where he lived from 1969 to 1971, and replaced with a new one.
The builders who took away the white and blue lavatory were told to "put some flowers in it or something," according to the auction catalog.
Builder John Hancock stored it in his shed for 40 years until he died recently and the lavatory was sent for sale, British media reports said.
The toilet was among Beatles memorabilia sold at auction as part of the Beatle week festival in Liverpool, the group's native city in northwest England. The pre-auction estimate was 750 to 1,000 pounds.
Anne-Marie Trace, who works at the Beatles Shop in Liverpool which organized the sale, said the high price paid had taken the organizers by surprise.
"I think it's the most unusual item we've ever had in our auction," she told Reuters.
The buyer was not identified but Trace said it was likely it was "going overseas."

According to reports from a number of sources, including the BBC, ten Ferrari 458s have burst into flames in the past three months.
Across the globe – from California to China - the Italian sportscars have all caught fire while being driven, the reports say.
The 458 has only been on sale for about four months now and 200 models are estimated to be on the streets.

There are enough similarities in the incidents to make Ferrari sit up and take notice, with the luxury sportscar maker on Wednesday announcing that it will be investigating the fires.
According to motorcrave.com, an official press release was issued by the factory in Maranello and said that Ferrari "takes its customers seriously".
"The company is currently investigating the particular incidents in which cars have apparently been involved in a vehicle fire, and it is currently treating these as separate incidents. Until these investigations are complete, Ferrari is unable to provide any further comment," the statement said.

The world's farms may get a little greener with the introduction of hydrogen-fueled tractors that emit only heat, vapor, and water.
New Holland announced that its NH2 tractor prototype will appear at the 2010 Farm Progress Show in Boone, Iowa, on August 31. The NH2 uses fuel cells to convert compressed hydrogen to energy that powers the 106 hp tractor's motor.
The company manufactures a wide range of agricultural equipment and sees farms as the ideal candidate for this technology. Many have enough land to build alternative energy generators, such as wind and solar energy, that can be used to create hydrogen in an environmentally friendly manor, and it will also help farmers reduce their cost of purchasing fossil fuel, according to the company.

Japan develops 'touchable' 3D TV technology

A Japanese research team said Thursday it had developed the world's first 3D television system that allows users to touch, pinch or poke images floating in front of them.
"It is the first time that you can feel images in the air," said Norio Nakamura, senior scientist with the research team at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology.
"You can have the sense of touch like poking a rubber ball or stretching a sticky rice cake" when manipulating images, he told AFP by telephone.
The technology changes the shape of three-dimensional images in response to "touches", aided by cameras that monitor how the fingers move, Nakamura said.
It is not known when the technology will be put to practical use but its creators see it being used to simulate surgical operations and in video game software allowing players to experience the sensation of holding weapons or sports equipment.
It could even use scanned images to supplement existing realities, said Nakamura.
"This technology could create a virtual museum where visitors, including vision-impaired people, can put their hands on valuable sculptures that are usually untouchable," Nakamura said.

Chrysler released a dark and intimidating image of its police vehicle that goes on sale in September.
It's the police version of the all-new 2011 Dodge Charger equipped with either an E-85 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 or 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine with a fuel-saving multidisplacement system. The Pursuit's suspension is tuned for performance and saddled with heavy-duty antilock vented-disc brakes (ABS), front and rear stabilizer bars, and 18-inch performance tires on steel wheels. Rear-wheel drive design and a redesigned front and rear multilink suspension deliver a smooth ride, and its two-mode police-specific Electronic Stability Control (ESC) calibration make it "hot-pursuit ready."
The Crown Vic-alternative sounds pretty hard core, but that may or may not be a good thing. The dark and intimidating photo of the police vehicle that the carmaker released begs the question: should people be afraid of the police?

Based on its description of the 2011 Dodge Charger Pursuit as "sinister" and makes "any suspect stop in a panic," Chrysler seems to think so.

The chances of Kimi Raikkonen returning to F1 are looking slim with the Finn's second comment in less than a week saying his F1 days have gone by.
Raikkonen has been linked to a possible Formula One race-seat with Renault for next year's Championship while Red Bull, who back his rallying career, are also believed to be interested should one of their two confirmed drivers up and leave.
However, the Finn reckons he'll "probably" never return to the sport, which saw him crowned the 2007 World Champion with Ferrari.
"You never know but I will probably never return to Formula One," the 30-year-old told French sports daily L'Equipe.
"It's something I did for many years, I had many great moments. I won a World Championship title, which is what I always wanted, but times have changed.
"Now I'm in rallying and there are many other things apart from Formula One in life."
Raikkonen also revealed that one series he may consider in the future is the Le Mans 24-hour race.
"I would like to try but you need to find the right team," he said. "If you want to win, there are only two, Peugeot and Audi. One day, I hope, there will be an opportunity."

Mulders used the services of historian Marc Vermeeren to find the cousin, in the Waldviertel region, and another 39 distant relatives of Hitler, who killed himself in his bunker in Berlin in April 1945. Norbert H. gave Vermeeren and Mulders a sample of his saliva, who wanted to see if rumours of Hitler fathering a child to a French peasant woman during World War I were true.
Using both the Austrian sample and the serviette DNA, Mulders claims the link between the two men was 'irrefutable - the Y-chromosome was identical'. Hitler's DNA was found to contain Haplogroup E1b1b, commonly found in the Berbers of Morocco and also accounts for approximately 18 to 20 per cent of the Y-chromosomes of Sephardi Jews who hail from Morocco, Spain and Portugal.
'It is most commonly found in the Berbers of Morocco, in Algeria, Libya and Tunisia as well as among Ashkenazi and Sephardi Jews,' he said. 'One can from this postulate that Hitler was related to people whom he despised,' said Mulders in the magazine.

Tenho estado a ler Knives at Dawn, reporte da preparação da primeira equipa estado-unidense concorrente ao Bocuse d'Or em Lyon.
É espantosa a semelhança em atitude, postura, ambição, espírito de equipa, orgulho em toda a fase do trabalho existente numa cozinha e numa unidade de produção (particularmente de informação) de televisão.
É um trabalho que é julgado - apreciado,criticado - diariamente. O chef não é considerado pelo que cozinhou há uma semana, mas pelo que cozinhou há meia hora, exactamente como um pivot-apresentador-coordenador de um programa diário de informação.
A equipa é fundamental - e, no entanto, é o chef o alvo dos elogios ou das críticas. Cada comis - ou jornalista, produtor, realizador, anotador, câmara - tem orgulho no seu trabalho, sabe que sem ele nada seria possível, mas trabalha com aquele chef por escolha, numa cumplicidade que não é compreendida por quem esteja de fora.
A precisão é exactidão são basilares e levadas a um extremo que roça a insânia. Como também a preparação, tudo - mas tudo - antecipadamente colocado em posição para que nada falhe.

Panhard built the EBR (Engin Blindé de Reconnaissance – Armored Reconnaissance Car) in 1954-1963, though the company began designing it shortly after the end of World War II. It was used by both the French Army and the Portugese Army not only as a reconnaissance vehicle, but also as an anti-tank vehicle, armed with either the FL-10 (75mm) or FL-11 (90mm) cannon. The purpose of the extra four wheels, which could be raised or lowered as needed, was to reduce ground pressure, allowing the vehicle to traverse muddy or sandy ground that would swallow a typical four-wheeled vehicle.

About 1,200 EBRs were built, and they saw action in the Algerian War (1954-1962) and the Portugese Colonial War (1961-1974). I’ve yet to find out how long they remained in service, though it seems most of those remaining – if not all – are currently retired and in museums.

What made the EBR unique mechanically – more so than the 200hp flat-12 engine mounted midships – was its drive system. While the engine was laid out longitudinally, the transmission was transverse and sprouted four driveshafts: one to each of the two “front” wheels, then one back along either side of the vehicle that turned individual ring gears for each of the four center wheels, then, through universal joints, turned each of the “rear” wheels. I put “front” and “rear” in quotations because the EBR could be steered from either end. Thus, a crew consisted of one front driver, one rear driver, one gunner and one vehicle commander.
The whole thing weighed in at 12.7 (13) tons and had a maximum speed of 100 KPH (62 MPH).

Viktor Bout vem para a América?

BANGKOK — An appeals court in Thailand ruled Friday to extradite suspected Russian arms smuggler Viktor Bout to the United States, effectively ending a more than decade-long chase for the man dubbed "The Merchant of Death."
The decision overturns a lower court's rejection of the U.S. extradition request. The court said Bout must be extradited within three months or would be free to return to Russia.
Bout, a 43-year-old former Soviet air force officer, is reputed to be one of the world's most prolific arms dealers. He has allegedly supplied weapons that fueled civil wars in South America, the Middle East and Africa, with clients including Liberia's Charles Taylor and Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and both sides of the civil war in Angola.
Shackled in leg irons, Bout cried after the verdict was read and hugged his wife and daughter.
"This is the most unfair decision possible," his wife told reporters, speaking in Russian through a translator. "It is known the world over that this is a political case."
Bout says he is the victim of an American "frame-up." During testimony, Bout claimed he ran a legitimate air cargo business and was in Bangkok to discuss selling airplanes to Thai businessmen.

The case has become the center of a diplomatic tug-of-war between Moscow and Washington, both of which want Bout turned over.
Russia made great efforts to get Bout out of Thailand. Experts say Bout has been useful for Russia's intelligence apparatus, and Russia does not want him going on trial in the United States.
"We regret this ... unlawful, political decision," Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said during a visit to Armenia. He said Moscow believes the ruling was made "under very strong external pressure" and would continue to seek Bout's return to Russia.

Lawyers vows to fight extradition

Bout's lawyer Lak Nittiwattanawichan also called the extradition politically motivated and said he would try to keep fighting the extradition.
"I am going to submit a request to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Cabinet. I will also submit a request to the king and queen."
Bout was arrested in March 2008 at a Bangkok luxury hotel as part of an elaborate sting in which U.S. agents posed as arms buyers for the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, which Washington classifies as a terrorist organization.
After his arrest, Bout was indicted in the United States on charges of conspiring to sell millions of dollars worth of weapons to FARC, including more than 700 surface-to-air missiles, thousands of guns, high-tech helicopters and airplanes outfitted with grenade launchers and missiles.
In August 2009, the Bangkok Criminal Court rejected the extradition request. It said that Thailand considers the FARC a political movement and not a terrorist group, and that extradition under a Thai-U.S. treaty could not be granted for a political offense.
But the appeals court disagreed, saying the case was not a political one but a clear cut criminal case and Bout should go to New York to answer to criminal charges.
"The court has decided to overturn (the lower court verdict). Now Viktor Bout would have be extradited to the U.S. within three months according to the extradition act," the ruling said.

'Highest priority to the United States'

Bout has never been prosecuted, despite being the subject of U.N. sanctions, a Belgian money-laundering indictment and a travel ban.
U.S. State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said Thursday that the Thai ambassador in Washington was summoned to the State Department this week so that U.S. officials could "emphasize that this is of the highest priority to the United States."
Thai prosecutors appealed the lower court's ruling on Washington's request. And in February, U.S. prosecutors filed new charges in hopes of convincing reluctant officials in Thailand to extradite Bout despite Russia's objections.

Vivo nos Estados Unidos, pago impostos nos Estados Unidos (e também em Portugal... e até ao mês passado em Angola), e como é o Departamento de Estado que vai arcar com parte da despesa, é também com o meu dinheiro.

No género islâmico, Feisal Abdul Rauf até é simpático. Defende a tolerância religiosa e é isso mesmo que vai pregar no Médio Oriente. Duvido que, com as despesas pagas pelos Estados Unidos, a sua mensagem tenha qualquer eficácia...
O que mais me azucrina não é isso - a propaganda - mas o facto de eu ter sempre que pagar pela liberdade religiosa.
As igrejas são um dos melhores negócios hoje em dia, senão de sempre. A bem ou a mal (dízimo) sacam o dinheiro aos fiéis, sacam ao contribuinte (doação de terrenos, auxílios para isto e para aquilo) e, principalmente, não pagam impostos. É regra nos Estados Unidos existirem apenas duas coisas iniludíveis - a morte e os impostos. A morte, enfim, ainda não vi ninguém fugir-lhe; mas impostos? Ele há as isenções, os perdões, etc e, para as religiões - o paraíso.
No dia em que esses psicólogos e psiquiatras amadores que se arrogam títulos de padres, imãs, bispos e quejandos começarem a pagar como os restantes mortais, terão pelo menos a minha condescendência. Até lá, são uns intrujas que vivem à custa do próximo sem darem nada de volta.

A administração Obama não e excepção e, a acrditar em The New York Times, está a ir muito além da presidência de George W. Bush na utilização de forças "cinzentas" - não são bem militaes, nem agentes da CIA, nem pessoal civil subcontratado, mas uma miscelânea que se constitui e navega ao sabor das exigências legais que possam ser assacadas.

São elementos destas forças especiais que são vistos frequentemente na embaixada americana em Sanaa - mas não só eles. "Contratados" civis, que têm o mesmo aspecto (embora geralmente tenham uma idade mais avançada) fazem exactamente o mesmo trabalho no terreno, e sem os "incómodos" de pertencerem a forças armadas legítimas.

You might not remember the 1969 Mustang Boss 302. But if you do, you'll be even more excited about today's announcement of the 2012 Mustang Boss 302 and the 2012 Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca.
Based on the 2011 Mustang GT, the Boss 302 features upgrades to the engine output, brakes, suspension, interior, and exterior. It's lighter in weight and offers better aerodynamics and track performance, Ford said in a press release.
"The decision to build a modern Boss was not entered into lightly," said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development. "The entire team at Ford felt the time was right and with the right ingredients, the world-class 2011 Mustang could support a successful, race-bred, worthy successor to the original Boss 302. For us that meant a production Mustang that could top one of the world's best--the 2010 BMW M3--in lap times at Laguna Seca. We met our expectations."
To achieve a top speed of 155 mph, Ford used the same twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT) mechanism found on the Mustang GT. The Boss 302 also has aggressive control calibration that yields 440 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque.
The Boss 302 has a race-inspired clutch with upgraded friction materials that transmit power, and a short-throw, close-ratio six-speed manual transmission handles gear-change duties. Ford also used a 3.73-ratio rear axle with carbon fiber plates in the limited slip differential to improve torque handling and longevity. For those who want even more precise control over power delivery, a torque-sensing (Torsen) limited slip differential is an available option coupled with Recaro front seats, the company said.
To accommodate noise regulations and nonregulation situations, the attenuation disc is removable and includes a spacer plate sized to match aftermarket exhaust dump valves. If owners want to add a set of electric valves, they can undo two bolts on either side; the disc and spacer slide out and the valve will slide right in. And the side pipes are tuned so that drivers can run wide-open and the sound levels are comfortable and uniquely V8.
When it comes to suspension and steering, Ford incorporated higher-rate coil springs on all four corners, stiffer suspension bushings and a larger-diameter rear stabilizer bar, and five settings on the shocks. Changing the settings takes a small flat-head screwdriver to turn the adjustment screw between one and five.
The Boss 302 rides on lightweight 19-inch black alloy racing wheels in staggered widths: 9 inches in front, 9.5 inches in the rear. The Pirelli PZero summer tires are sized specifically for each end of the vehicle, with the front wheels receiving 255/40ZR-19 tires, whereas the rear stays planted thanks to 285/35ZR-19 rubber, Ford said.
"This car is wicked fast, so we put a lot of emphasis on giving it comparable stopping power," said Brent Clark, supervisor of the Mustang vehicle dynamics team. "We started with a race-proven brake system and tuned it specifically for the characteristics of the Boss 302 and its mission. They're the best brakes ever installed on a Mustang, and they give consistent, repeatable braking performance on the street and the track."
The Boss 302 isn't only about performance, it's also about a sporty, bad-boy look that is a throw back to its 1969 predecessor. Outside, the design is accented by an aerodynamically functional front splitter, designed to function at high speeds by efficiently managing the air under and around the car. The splitter helps to reduce underbody drag and front end lift while more effectively forcing air through a unique cooling system. And a spoiler at the rear of the car minimizes overall drag.
Inside, the driver is treated to Recaro buckets seats; dark metallic instrument panel finish, gauge cluster, and door panel trim; and an Alcantara suede steering wheel.

Flop no drive in

Muito do que outrora para o Mundo constituía a essência dos Estados Unidos, a "americana", perdeu-se com o progresso e a mudança de estilos de vida. O "drive in" é um dos ícones desaparecidos.
Na Georgia, como em muitos outros estados do Sul, alguns desses marcos tradicionais continuam a existir.
Há vários "drive in" em Atlanta e nas localidades vizinhas.
Ontem fomos a um deles, o Starlight. O preço dos bilhetes - 7 dólares por pessoa para uma sessão dupla - é inferior ao dos cinemas normais e na sessão em cartaz estavam dois sucessos do momento: "The Other Men" e "SALT".

Como aconselhado chegámos cedo, embora demasiado cedo... umas duas horas antes.
Havia somente meia dúzia de carros. Um casal que estava num SUV à nossa direita trazia mais acessórios que os outros espectadores: cadeiras, geleira portátil, mas também um assador, onde foram esturricadas meia dúzia de salsichas enquanto esperavam pelos filmes.
E bem que esperámos!
A primeira sessão deveria começar às 21:30 - e nada... Às 22:15 apareceram funcionários do cinema em carrinhos de golf a explicar haver uma avaria na cabina de projecção, não haveria filmes nessa noite. Os espectadores frustrados podiam optar por ver os filmes que estavam a ser projectados nos outros 5 recintos ou receber um "rain check" de acesso a próximas sessões.

Se antes das explicações houve buzinadelas e assobios de protesto por a projecção não ter começado a horas, depois todos aceitaram a situação como normal - uma avaria pode acontecer a qualquer momento e não é caso para tragédias...

Da Virginia para a Georgia

O regresso aos Estados Unidos coincidiu com o final do leasing da casa na Virginia.

Havia que mudar, mas para onde?
Tentámos o Delaware, mas nada de jeito apareceu por lá.
Como havia que mudar, por que não mudar para paragens menos frias, mais a Sul?
Por vários motivos, a escolha recaiu na Georgia, zona de Atlanta.
Primeiro que tudo, houve que alugar a camião e espremer toda a tralha para dentro dele.

Tarefa que nunca é fáil - temos sempre muito mais do que julgamos...
Feitas as opções, separado e abandonado o supérfluo, na última quinta-feira de Julho estavamos prontos para a viagem.

A partida foi às 04.55 de sexta-feira.

Ao fim de quase meio dia na estrada - chegámos às 16:45 -- houve que descarregar toda a tralha num armazem na Georgia.

Tarefa que também nunca é fácil. Memso a tralha "encolhida" para caber no camião parecia subitamente ter "inchado", nõ querendo adaptar-se às dimensões do armazém.

Ao fim de várias tentativas frustradas, que implicaram tirar por duas vezes quase tudo o que já tinha sido arrumado, conseguiu-se fechar a porta do armazém.
Estamos na Georgia!

E enquanto tratamos dos trâmites para a nova casa, estamos aboletados nesta vivenda de familiares...

E não é só sexo não!

Se fosse, era resolvido fácil, alguém dúvida?
Sexo se encontra nos classificados, nas esquinas, em qualquer lugar, mas apenas sexo!
Estamos é com carência de passear de mãos dadas, dar e receber carinho, sem necessariamente, ter que depois mostrar performances dignas de um atleta olímpico na cama .... sexo de academia . . .

Fazer um jantar pra quem você gosta e depois saber que vão "apenas" dormir abraçadinhos,
sem se preocuparem com as posições cabalisticas...
Sabe essas coisas simples, que perdemos nessa marcha de uma evolução cega.
Pode fazer tudo, desde que não interrompa a carreira, a produção...
Tornamo-nos máquinas, e agora estamos desesperados por não saber como voltar a "sentir", só isso, algo tão simples que a cada dia fica tão distante de nós...
Quem duvida do que estou dizendo, dá uma olhada nos sites de relacionamentos "ORKUT", "PAR-PERFEITO" e tantos outros, veja o número de comunidades como: "Quero um amor pra vida toda!", "Eu sou pra casar!" até a desesperançada "Nasci pra viver sozinho!"
Unindo milhares, ou melhor, milhões de solitários, em meio a uma multidão de rostos cada vez mais estranhos, plásticos, quase etéreos e inacessíveis, se olharmos as fotos de antigamente, pode ter certeza de que não são as mesmas pessoas, mulheres lindas se plastificando, se mutilando em nome da tal "beleza"...

Vivemos cada vez mais tempo, retardamos o envelhecimento, e percebemos a cada dia mulheres e homens com cara de bonecas, sem rugas, sorriso preso e cada vez mais sozinhos...
Sei que estou parecendo o solteirão infeliz, mas pelo contrário...

Queira do seu lado a mulher inteligente: "Vamos ter bons e maus momentos e uma hora ou outra, um dos dois, ou quem sabe os dois, vão querer pular fora, mas se eu não pedir que fique comigo, tenho certeza de que vou me arrepender pelo resto da vida"...

Porque ter medo de dizer isso, porque ter medo de dizer: "amo você", "fica comigo", então não se importe com a opinião dos outros, seja feliz!

Claro que foi preso, ameaçado. Mas a sua acção tornou-se num exemplo para outros funcionários russos que estão fartos da corrupção.

O ministro da Agricultura, António Serrano, apresentou ontem a campanha "Previna-se e Viva", que passa por recomendar à população que guarde alimentos na despensa e numa mochila de emergência para responder a situações de crise.
Num supermercado de Lisboa, o ministro admi- tiu que já em 2005 tentou fazer avançar este dossier, que é uma "resposta obrigatória" dos Esta- dos membros da NATO. "Estamos a fazer o contrário do que se faz: depois de portas arrombadas, trancas nas portas", resumiu António Serrano.
A cada português é apresentada a "despensa que não se dispensa" e a "mochila de emergência", através de um folheto disponibilizado nos supermercados pela Associação Portuguesa de Empresas de Distribuição.
A "mochila de emergência" deverá conter alimentos básicos e utensílios como guardanapos, fósforos, panelas pequenas, canivete multiusos e lanterna. Tudo para sobreviver a uma eventual crise.

O geólogo da Universidade do Minho José Brilha disse hoje, em Braga, que não há dados científicos suficientes para provar que se esteja a verificar um aumento da temperatura média do planeta.
“Ainda não há dados para dizer que há alterações climáticas permanentes que tenham como causa a ação humana”, afirmou em declarações à Lusa.
O cientista falava no final da conferência do geólogo sueco Nils- Axel Morner, que tem sido um dos principais defensores mundiais da tese de que não há provas bastantes para demonstrar que a terra enfrenta alterações climáticas permanentes.
O cientista sueco, que abriu o VIII Congresso Nacional de Geologia que hoje começou em Braga, defendeu ainda, na sua alocução, que a tese do risco do aumento do nível do mar, que poria em perigo as zonas costeiras, também não está provada cientificamente.
O especialista desenvolveu a ideia com base nos estudos que realizou em diversas zonas costeiras do mundo, feitas – frisou – “no terreno e não apenas em computador”.
José Brilha partilha da tese de Axel Morner: “como geólogo o que digo é que sempre houve alterações climáticas no planeta, em que o clima era mais quente ou mais frio, e as rochas e os fósseis mostram-nos isso”.
Acentua que a maioria dos geólogos pensa que “não há dados suficientes, ainda, para se poder dizer que se esteja a registar um aumento da temperatura média do planeta, e que esse aumento seja originado pela actividade humana”.
Defende que “são precisos muitos mais dados, e ao longo de muito tempo para se estabelecerem tendências”.
“Aquela polémica do ‘climategate’ veio demonstrar que a ideia central passada nos media é um bocado alarmista, pois, quando vemos os dados com cuidado verificamos que não há suporte para afirmar aquele tipo de coisas”, observa.
Para o investigador, “ninguém sabe se o que está a acontecer são coisas naturais, pontuais ou se são tendências, pois não há dados científicos credíveis”.
José Brilha sublinha que os geólogos não dizem que tal não possa estar a suceder mas insiste em que “faltam dados, para dizer, sem qualquer margem para dúvida, que é a poluição que está a causar este tipo de transformações”.
Apesar das reservas que manifesta à tese das alterações climáticas, José Brilha assinala que se deve “aproveitar o alarmismo à volta das alterações climáticas para convencer a sociedade em geral que temos de ter uma outra postura face ao planeta, de poupar recursos que são escassos, de tentar poluir menos e reduzir emissões”.
“Não podemos cair no outro extremismo, o de se pensar que, como parece que podemos não ser os causadores das alterações climáticas, nos é permitido continuar a poluir”, frisou.
Para o universitário, há que contrariar o caminho atual “baseado no gasto completamente desenfreado dos recursos naturais sem respeito pela natureza e pelos seus ciclos naturais”.

É muito raro alguém poder de facto exprimir em vida as suas verdadeiras opiniões.
Há cem anos, muito longe da era do politicamente correcto, Mark Twain ditou - durante quatro anos - o que verdadeiramente pensava. Como lemos hoje em The New York Times, Twain sabia que essas opiniões, se reveladas quando as expressou, seriam imediatamente atacadas e destruídas pelo sistema e a sua reputação inabalavelmente esmagada:
Wry and cranky, droll and cantankerous — that’s the Mark Twain we think we know, thanks to reading “Huck Finn” and “Tom Sawyer” in high school. But in his unexpurgated autobiography, whose first volume is about to be published a century after his death, a very different Twain emerges, more pointedly political and willing to play the role of the angry prophet.
Whether anguishing over American military interventions abroad or delivering jabs at Wall Street tycoons, this Twain is strikingly contemporary. Though the autobiography also contains its share of homespun tales, some of its observations about American life are so acerbic — at one point Twain refers to American soldiers as “uniformed assassins” — that his heirs and editors, as well as the writer himself, feared they would damage his reputation if not withheld.

US, Israel Warships in Suez May Be Prelude to Faceoff with Iran

Egypt allowed at least one Israeli and 11 American warships to pass through the Suez Canal as an Iranian flotilla approaches Gaza. Egypt closed the canal to protect the ships with thousands of soldiers, according to the British-based Arabic language newspaper Al Quds al-Arabi.
One day prior to the report on Saturday, Voice of Israel government radio reported that the Egyptian government denied an Israeli request not to allow the Iranian flotilla to use the Suez Canal to reach Gaza, in violation of the Israeli sea embargo on the Hamas-controlled area.
International agreements require Egypt to keep the Suez open even for warships, but the armada, led by the USS Truman with 5,000 sailors and marines, was the largest in years. Egypt closed the canal to fishing and other boats as the armada moved through the strategic passageway that connects the Red and Mediterranean Seas.
Despite Egypt’s reported refusal to block the canal to Iranian boats, the clearance for the American-Israeli fleet may be a warning to Iran it may face military opposition if the Iranian Red Crescent ship continues on course to Gaza.
The warships may exercise the right to inspect the Iranian boat for the illegal transport or weapons. Newsweek reported that Egyptian authorities could stop the ship for weeks, using technicalities such as requiring that any official documents be translated from Farsi into Arabic.
The magazine’s website also reported that the Iranian navy is the weakest part of its armed forces. Tehran has already backed down from announced intentions to escort the Iranian ships with "volunteer marines” from the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.
The Iranian news site Hamsayeh.net reported, “The move might be in connection to U.S. self-inflicted embargo against Iran aimed at inspecting Iran bound ships for suspected goods related to the country’s nuclear program.”

Another battle on the high seas may involve one, and possibly two, Lebanese vessels that are aimed at challenging Israel’s sovereignty over the Gaza coastal waters. Hizbullah, gearing up for a reaction to a possible clash between the Israeli Navy (pictured) and the Lebanese boats, has delayed rocket units near Lebanese ports, according to unofficial military sources.
Israel has warned U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon that Israel will use force, if necessary, to stop the boats, one of which is carrying approximately 70 women passengers and crew organized by Hizbullah support Samar al-Hajj. Her husband is one of several jailed suspects involved in the assassination for former Lebanese anti-Syrian Prime Rafik Hariri.
Hizbullah has denied it is connected with the Lebanese flotilla, but it has been reported that Al Hajj met with Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah last month. (IsraelNationalNews.com)

PARIS — Tóquio é a cidade mais cara do mundo para os estrangeiros que vivem lá e o Rio de Janeiro, a mais cara do continente americano, enquanto Londres deixou de figurar entre as primeiras cinquenta, segundo um estudo divulgado nesta segunda-feira em Paris pela consultoria britânica ECA.
O estudo, feito antes da queda do euro, mede os preços de bens de consumo e serviços (alojamento, alimentação, transporte, vestuário, lazer, etc) de 400 cidades do mundo.
Depois de Tóquio, o segundo lugar é ocupado por Oslo e o terceiro por Luanda. No continente americano, Rio de Janeiro aparece em primeira posição.
"Contrastando com o ano anterior, o aumento da demanda por matérias-primas reforçou o valor do real e permitiu às cidades brasileiras subir na classificação", afirma o relatório.
Madrid e Barcelona estão, respectivamente, na 34ª e 35ª colocação entre as cidades europeias, e em 68º e 71º lugares no ranking mundial.
A grande surpresa do estudo foi Londres, que ficou em 78º lugar e já não faz parte das primeiras 50 cidades.
Durante muito tempo, Londres ficou entre as capitais onde o custo de vida era um dos mais elevados.
Luanda, antigo líder da classificação, caiu para o terceiro lugar, e Paris para o décimo sexto.
Nenhuma cidade americana está entre as 25 primeiras cidades. Nova York ficou no 48º lugar.
"A queda do dólar acarretou uma leve alta do custo de vida na maioria das cidades da América do Norte", explica a ECA.
"A fragilidade da libra esterlina (...) provocou uma diminuição dos preços para aqueles que visitam o Reino Unido", afirma o relatório. Como consequência, "Londres está mais barata que outras cidades europeias como Munique, Amsterdão ou Bruxelas", afirma.
Cinco cidades africanas estão entre as 25 primeiras: além de Luanda, Libreville está no 13º posto, Abidjan no 17º, Abuja no 18º e Kinshasa em 23º. Com a excepção de Abidjan, as outras quatro cidades estão em regiões produtoras e exportadoras de petróleo.
O ranking das primeiras 50 é encerrado por Atenas.
"A flutuação das moedas continua a ser o facto mais influente na evolução do custo de vida", conclui a investigação realizada entre março de 2009 e março de 2010.

This is the Strand Craft 122 Open, a proposed ultra-luxurious, high-speed 38 meter yacht. If you fork over the cash to buy one you get the matching stored-aboard 880HP, twin-turbocharged V12-powered coach-built super car thrown in for free.

Strand Craft is not new to mixing cars with boats, recall the Corvette Sting Ray-inspired speeder from a few years back. But this behemoth is on a whole different scale. The Strand Craft 122 is planned as an art deco masterstroke powered by two massive MTU Series 4000 diesel engines good for over 9,200 HP and running two Rolls Royce jet drives.

If that's not enough there's an optional "booster" engine in the form of a Vericor TF 50 delivering another 5,100 HP. At 38 meters with a 7.6 meter beam and 1.5 meter draft, it clocks in at 120 tons, but with so much power delivers a planned 55 knot top speed (about 63 MPH).

Then there's the car. Stored inside the boat in a garage below the rear deck is the Strand Craft Tender, a misnomer in a way with a twin-turbocharged V12 delivering 880HP and a top speed of 233 MPH. The coach-built, ultra-custom car is designed to compliment the 122's design and provide extremely speedy land transport wherever you put in to port.

There is no price attached to this whole endeavor, which means if you have to ask you can't afford it, we certainly hope some rich fool steps up to the plate just so we can see that super car doing smokey burnouts at sea.

Lendo hoje o "i", deparei com esta notícia:
A Presidência da República da Venezuela decretou a criação de um novo Centro de Estudo Situacional da Nação (Cesna), que terá como função compilar, processar e analisar permanentemente a informação de órgãos estatais sobre aspetos de interesse nacional.
O decreto de criação do Cesna foi publicado na Gazeta Oficial 39436, que hoje circulou em Caracas, dependendo o novo organismo do Ministério do Poder Popular para as Relações Interiores e Justiça.
Há 35 anos tive que lidar com uma criatura que controlava em Luanda um aparelho semelhante - o inefável comandante Correia Jesuíno.
Jesuíno era um psicopata do controlo dos media. Das vezes que me dei ao trabalho de ir à Cidade Alta ouvir as reclamações que ele tinha contra o jornal (primeiro "a provincia de Angola", depois tornado por nós em "Jornal de Angola") éramos forçados a dar explicações sobre intenções que só existiam na cabeça dele e dos mentecaptos (um deles, vendedor de mobílias promovido a censor, teve mais tarde um cargo importante na censura do regime angolano, antes de um cancro no cérebro ter livrado a Humanidade de tão sinistro personagem) que o acolitavam.
Como todos as figuras desse jaez, era de facto poderoso. Uma ordem dele significava deportação, prisão, rapto. São disso exemplo o que aconteceu a João Fernandes e depois a Joaquim Castro Lopo.
Depois de demonstrar ser o executor ideal para tão vis funções, regressou a Portugal e foi promovido a ministro da Comunicação Social. Por lá continuou a exercer o seu vil mister até ser corrido quando a maioria dos portugueses caiu em si e decidiu que já chegava de insanidade.
É interessante notar que ao procurar para ilustrar este post fotografia da criatura que tão poderosa foi durante uma dúzia de meses, o Google não me conseguiu encontrar uma que fosse...

Leio no "Jornal de Notícias" (http://jn.sapo.pt/paginainicial/pais/concelho.aspx?Distrito=Faro&Concelho=Portim%E3o&Option=Interior&content_id=1576401) que quatro navios de guerra portugueses desactivados vão ser afundados ao largo de Portimão. Será assim criado um museu subaquático, ao mesmo tempo que se transformarão em recifes artificiais para "aumentar a biodiversidade das espécies".
É prática comum por todo o mundo: navios, carruagens, tanques e outra sucata são limpos e atirados para as profundezas, proporcionando a regeneração dos cardumes e novas atracções para mergulho subaquático.
Em Angola prefere-se o abandono das carcaças dos navios perto das praias. O "Joaquim Kapango" apodrece a norte do Cacuaco, quando podia estar a servir para o repovoamento piscícola, desbaratado por anos de arrasto descontrolado.

Lembro-me em miúdo dos mergulhos que dávamos nos batelões afundados na contracosta, na luta incessante contra a erosão provocada desde o tempo em que a ponte da ilha foi entulhada para permitir o acesso de automóveis.
A actividade subaquática em Luanda está praticamente morta. Não se vê ninguém a mergulhar nas pedras junto ao Morro dos Veados - já não andam por lá os pargos e as garoupas enormes que as habitavam.
Parece já não haver mais barcos para ir para a sucata - mas tanques e outros blindados estropiados é coisa que não falta em Angola. Por que não lhes dar outra utilidade para além da de desfearem a paisagem?

A notícia que me despertou a curiosidade vem no Diário Económico (http://economico.sapo.pt/noticias/como-ter-um-ferrari-por-25-mil-euros-sem-o-comprar_90360.html). Já conhecia o sistema: através de um clube ou uma loja, o pagamento de uma quota ou de um aluguer permite-se a alguém o usufruto temporário de um bem para o qual não tem posses.
Como em todos os posts na Internet que permitem comentários, estes são sempre o mais interessante. E, no caso da Overtep, parece terem falhado redondamente. Falhado não é quem se aproveita do sistema para obter resultados, mas sim o próprio sistema.
Há muito, muito tempo, Luanda ficou surpreendida quando pelas suas ruas apareceu um Lamborghini P-400 Miura. Era prateado, matrícula AAE-22-22. Ao volante, normalmente, via-se um dos mecânicos Vitorino, da garagem do ATCA - o carro, de facto, não era para aquelas poeiras e estava continuamente engasgado e desafinado.
Vi o proprietário uma noite no Contencioso. Era um jovem advogado, não me lembro do nome. Lembro-me sim da explicação que deu para a compra do Miura: nesta cidade, há duas maneiras de se ficar conhecido - ou comprando um automóvel espampanante, absolutamente deslocado; ou casando com uma mulher espampanante, absolutamente deslocada. Disse que a compra do automóvel acabava por ser mais fácil e barata...
No actual sistema de valores vigente em Portugal, consegue mais créditos financeiros ou sociais quem se apresente (nem que seja só por um dia...) ao volante de um Bentley do que quem de facto o mereça. Acredito que quem recorre ao OverStep consegue mais facilmente os seus objectivos do que outrem que procure atingi-los pelos meios tradicionalmente aceitáveis.

I like this very much: a vehicle that behaves like a plant, photosynthesizing carbon dioxide from the air and exchanging oxygen back into the atmosphere. Meet the YeZ, a concept two-seater that makes other eco cars blush when it comes to zero and even negative emissions.
Showcased recently at the Shanghai Expo 2010, Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC)--perhaps driven by the mainland's extensive pollution--is behind this clever little creation in partnership with General Motors and Volkswagen. YeZ, pronounced yea-zi, which means "leaf" in Mandarin, also lends its name to the aesthetics and big, leaf-like roof of the buggy (though I'll cross my fingers and toes that the commercial version won't look quite so kitschy).
YeZ works its magic of photoelectric conversion with the help of state-of-the-art solar panels on the roof, wind power conversion via small wind turbines in the wheels, and carbon dioxide absorption and conversion through the bodywork. This last bit is made of a metal-organic framework that can apparently absorb carbon dioxide and water molecules from the air. Through the series of chemical reactions, energy is generated, and it's then stored in the car's lithium ion batteries.
According to the press release, the electric car will "work during both sunny and overcast days, while also being able to leverage wind power" and enable "mobility with zero greenhouse gas emissions." But that's a claim that will have to wait a good 20 years to flower. Hopefully, we won't all be wearing respirators by then just to breathe in some clean air.

Durante a visita do casal presidencial mexicano a Washington, Michelle Obama deslocou-se com Margarita Zavala uma turma da segunda classe de uma escola primária no Maryland. Quando gentilmente pediram às crianças que fizessem perguntas, uma pequerrucha latina travou o seguinte diálogo com Michelle:
“My mom,” the girl started hesitantly, “she says that Barack Obama is taking everybody away that doesn’t have papers.”

É uma situação verdadeira tanto para o casal Obama como para a maioria dos dirigentes deste mundo. As limousines blindadas e o enxame de guarda-costas isolam-nos de realidades que são conhecidas pelos cidadãos comuns dos seus países.
Se não querem andar entre a populaça, terão que criar mecanismos de informação que os mantenham ao corrente do que verdadeiramente o povo vive e pensa. Há líderes (muitos deles acusados ignorantemente de viverem em torres de marfim) que desenvolveram sistemas desses e conseguem por isso manter uma postura que serve os seus povos. Outros, aparentemente mais próximos dos seus eleitores, estão deles afinal completamente divorciados.

O embaixador israelita Yitzhak Yanuka está em Angola com seu parceiro, Mikey Goldstein, desde 1995. Goldstein é o chefe da comissão de Jerusalém Open House, e durante anos foi um activista da comunidade gay e lésbica de Israel.
Há alguns meses, o Ministério das Relações Exteriores israelita aprovou a nomeação de Yanuka e esperou pela aprovação do governo angolano. As autoridades angolanas não emitiram uma recusa oficial para evitar prejudicar as relações, mas não confirmaram a nomeação.
Um porta-voz da embaixada israelense em Luanda, Angola, disse na semana passada que a embaixada tinha ouvido relatos da mídia local de que a demora da nomeação de Yanuka estava ligada à sua sexualidade, mas não pôde confirmar se foi esse o caso.
O porta-voz disse igualmente que um artigo num dos jornais de Angola afirmou que a relutância em aprovar a nomeação Yanuka se pode ter originado a partir de preocupações de que traria o seu parceiro com ele para Luanda.
Nas últimas semanas, Goldstein teria decidido que não iria acompanhar Yanuka se ele for nomeado, mas o Governo angolano ainda não aprovou as suas Cartas Credenciais.
Yanuka decidiu anular a sua candidatura para o cargo, uma decisão que o Ministério dos Negócios Estrangeiros israelita disse ser por "razões pessoais".
O porta-voz da embaixada disse que ninguém da embaixada foi informada pelo governo angolano porque a nomeação de Yanuka foi adiada, disse que funcionários do governo angolano temiam que a nomeação do diplomata israelense "poderia pôr em risco o relacionamento entre o governo israelense e o governo angolano”.

A homossexualidade e a diplomacia sempre andaram de mãos dadas. Dizia-me há tempos um cônsul geral português que a sua carreira no Palácio das Necessidades tem sido fortemente prejudicada pelo simples facto de não ser homossexual.
Isso não se passa somente em relação aos diplomatas portugueses - quem faz o "circuito das embaixadas" pode ver o que por lá se passa, mas sem que essa opção sexual seja abertamente anunciada ou reconhecida. Uma espécie do "don't ask, don't tell" dos militares americanos... Aliás Yitzhak Yanuka não seria o primeiro nem o último embaixador gay em Angola. A decisão agora tomada é um aviso que os "armários" devem manter-se fechados...

As mulheres bonitas são um problema para a saúde dos homens. A conclusão é de um estudo realizado pela Universidade de Valência, em Espanha, que detectou sinais de stress nos homens que conviviam com uma mulher bonita.
Os investigadores testaram 84 homens. O que tinham de fazer era resolver um problema de Sudoku numa sala onde estavam dois estranhos, um homem e uma mulher. Quando a mulher abandonava a sala, os níveis de stress do indivíduo testado mantinham-se normais. Mas, quando a mulher entrava, os níveis de cortisol, a hormona do stress e da adrenalina, subiam.
“Este estudo prova que os níveis de cortisol masculino aumentam depois de um breve contacto social com uma mulher jovem e atraente”, concluíram os investigadores. O efeito pode ser ainda maior quando os sujeitos consideram que a mulher em questão pode estar fora do seu alcance.
O cortisol é essencial à vida. Tem efeitos nomeadamente no bem-estar dos indivíduos, mas níveis elevados podem ter efeitos negativos na saúde, podendo provocar problemas de coração, hipertensão ou diabetes.

Do Buco Zau a Banga

Para quem passou pelo Chimbete, Banga era a base onde estava o MPLA. Nada de preocupante - deste lado éramos uns 230, do lado de lá eram 16. Além disso, muitos deles eram nossos conhecidos, não havia animosidades.
Estas só começaram a surgir quando entrou pessoal novo para a tropa portuguesa: desataram a fazer asneiras, como destruir aldeias e arrasar povoações. A isso seguiu-se a chegada de recrutas a Banga, que começaram a fazer treino de emboscada e acabaram por desencadear a acção em que foi morto o meu amigo alferes médico Miguel Silvério Marques.

Hoje a Angop distribuía a seguinte notícia:
A administradora municipal de Buco Zau, Marta da Conceição Lelo, manifestou hoje (sexta-feira), nesta cidade, a sua satisfação pelo grau de execução da reabilitação dos 30 quilómetros da estrada que liga a sede do município às aldeias de Sanga Wanga (Angola) e Banga (Congo Brazaville).
Onze dos 30 quilómetros da via encontram-se terraplenados, enquanto os outros 19 estão desmatados e aguardam por igual tratamento.
Marta Lelo avançou que a conclusão da obra irá facilitar as trocas comerciais com o província vizinha de Kouilou (Congo Brazaville) e estimular o crescimento socio-económico da localidade.
Por seu lado, o encarregado da obra, Fernando Ricardo, assegurou à Angop que os trabalhos, iniciados a 15 de Janeiro do ano em curso, caminham satisfatoriamente.
Segundo ele, a empreitada vai atingir a outra margem do rio Nhunca, onde se encontra o marco que divide a fronteira comum com a povoação congolesa de Banga, para garantir uma melhor mobilidade das populações.
O responsável acrescentou que as obras decorrem num clima de segurança e estabilidade o que tem permitido com que os técnicos e empregados da empresa trabalhem com tranquilidade para a conclusão rápida da estrada.

Já nessa altura sonhávamos que bom seria fazermos a rota Buco Zau - Chimbete - Sanga Mongo e, passando pela Baliza F, até Banga, sem ser a pé a picar o terreno à procura de minas, sem termos que deixar as laranjas maduras na árvore que sabíamos estar à volta completamente minada. Um sonho que se concretiza trinta anos depois.

The virginity industry

Young Arab women wait in an upmarket medical clinic for an operation that will not only change their lives, but quite possibly save it. Yet the operation is a matter of choice and not necessity. It costs about 2,000 euros (£1,700) and carries very little risk.
The clinic is not in Dubai or Cairo, but in Paris. And the surgery they are waiting for is to restore their virginity.
Whether in Asia or the Arab world, an unknown number of women face an agonising problem having broken a deep taboo. They've had sex outside marriage and if found out, risk being ostracised by their communities, or even murdered.
Now more and more of them are undergoing surgery to re-connect their hymens and hide any sign of past sexual activity. They want to ensure that blood is spilled on their wedding night sheets.
The social pressure is so great that some women have even taken their own lives.
Sonia wants to remain anonymous for fear of reprisal. She is a slender young brunette studying at art college in Paris.
Although born in France, Arab culture and traditions are central to Sonia's life. Life was strict growing up under the watchful eyes of a large traditional Arab family.

Virginity certificates
"I thought of suicide after my first sexual relationship," she says, "because I couldn't see any other solution." But Sonia did find a solution.
She eventually went to the Paris clinic of Dr Marc Abecassis to have surgery to restore her hymen. She says she will never reveal her secret to anyone, especially her husband to be.

"I consider this is my sex life and I don't have to tell anyone about it," she says. It's men that are obliging her to lie about it, she says.
Dr. Abecassis performs a "hymenoplasty" as it's called, at least two to three times a week. Re-connecting the tissue of the hymen takes about 30 minutes under local anaesthetic.
He says the average age of the patient is about 25, and they come from all social backgrounds. Although the surgery is performed in clinics around the world, Dr Abecassis is one of the few Arab surgeons who talks openly about it. Some of the women come to him because they need virginity certificates in order to marry.
"She can be in danger because sometimes it's a matter of traditions and family," says Dr Abecassis. "I believe we as doctors have no right to decide for her or judge her."
With Chinese manufacturers leading the way, there are now non-surgical options on the market as well. One website sells artificial hymens for just £20 (23 euros). The Chinese hymen is made of elastic and filled with fake blood. Once inserted in the vagina, the woman can simulate virginity, the company claims.

'Caught out'
But this was not an option for Nada. As a young girl growing up in the Lebanese countryside she fell in love and lost her virginity. "I was scared my family would find out especially since they didn't approve of my relationship," she says. "I was terrified they might kill me."
After seven years in the relationship, her lover's family wanted him to marry someone else. Nada attempted suicide. "I got a bottle of Panadol and a bottle of household chemicals," she says. "I drank them and said, 'That's it'."
Nada is now 40, and found out about surgical hymen restoration just six years ago. She married and had two children. Her wedding night was a stressful ordeal. "I didn't sleep that night. I was crying," she says. "I was very scared but he didn't suspect anything."
It's a secret that Nada - which is not her real name - will carry to her grave. "I am ready to hide it until death," she says. "Only God will know about it."
But it's not only the older generation that subscribes to traditional views about sex before marriage, when it comes to choosing a wife.
Noor is a trendy professional who works in Damascus. He's fairly representative of young Syrian men in a secular society. But although Noor says he believes in equality for women, underneath the liberal facade lies a deep-rooted conservatism.
"I know girls who went through this restoration and they were caught out on their wedding night by their husbands," he says. "They realised they weren't virgins. Even if society accepts such a thing, I would still refuse to marry her."
Muslim clerics are quick to point out that the virginity issue is not about religion. "We should remember that when people wait for the virgin's blood to be spilled on the sheet, these are all cultural traditions," says Syrian cleric, Sheikh Mohamad Habash. "This is not related to Shariah law."
Christian communities in the Middle East are often just as firm in their belief that women should be virgins when they marry.
Arab writer and social commentator, Sana Al Khayat believes the whole issue has much to with the notion of "control".
"If she's a virgin, she doesn't have any way of comparing [her husband to other men]. If she's been with other men, then she has experience. Having experience makes women stronger."
It may be the 21st Century but the issue of virginity in Arab culture can still be a matter of life and death, especially for women like Sonia and Nada.
And while hymen repair may be a quick fix, it can't reconcile centuries of ingrained tradition with the attitudes of modern society.

Para o mais famoso cientista do mundo, Stephen Hawking, os extraterrestres existem e os humanos devem evitá-los a todo custo. Numa série de documentários produzida para o canal “Discovery Channel” - que será transmitida a partir de 9 de Maio - o físico teórico britânico reflecte sobre os grandes mistérios do universo e garante ser “perfeitamente racional” assumir que existe vida inteligente além da Terra. Não só nos planetas, mas também no centro das estrelas e até a flutuar pelo espaço interplanetário.
Mas isso não são boas notícias, alerta. “Se os extraterrestres nos visitassem, as consequências seriam semelhantes às [que aconteceram] quando Cristóvão Colombo desembarcou na América, algo que não acabou bem para os nativos”, aponta o professor da Universidade de Cambridge, doutorado em Cosmologia.
Por isso, Hawking não tem dúvidas: os humanos têm que evitar contactar com eles. “Basta olhar o que ocorre connosco para ver como poderia transformar-se a vida inteligente em algo que não queríamos conhecer”. O cientista acredita que os extraterrestres iriam procurar recursos esgotados no seu planeta de origem e colonizar a Terra com consequências devastadoras.
A crença nos extraterrestres - que serão micróbios ou animais simples - do membro da Real Sociedade de Londres consolidou-se após a descoberta de mais de 450 novos planetas desde 1995.

Ferrari mostly sat silent while the coveted Nurburgring Nordschleife lap record bounced between Porsche, Nissan, and Dodge for the last few rounds. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, the Italian Stallion threw down the gauntlet with an impressive lap in the ultra-hot, 700-horsepower Ferrari 599XX, the first production car to lap the famous Green Hell in under seven minutes.
Stopping the clock at 6 minutes, 58.16 seconds, the 599XX is sickeningly fast. However, unlike the 911s, GT-Rs, and Vipers that have just had their collective worlds crushed, the 599XX isn't exactly street legal. This raises some interesting questions about what a "production car" actually is and--at least in our minds--some question about the validity of Ferrari's claim of the World's Fastest Production car.
Regardless of whether you care about records or not, a sub-seven minute 'Ring lap is still an impressive feat. You can see for yourself in the video below.

O presidente da Bolívia, Evo Morales, foi protagonista de uma nova polémica quando assegurou que o consumo de alimentos geneticamente modificados, os transgénicos, provoca calvície e que os frangos engordados com hormonas são a causa da homossexualidade.
A teoria de Morales é que a grande quantidade de hormonas femininas nos frangos está na origem da alteração de comportamentos sexuais nos homens, levando à homossexualidade. Existem “tantos homossexuais na Europa e no Mundo” por causa dos alimentos geneticamente modificados que consomem em grande escala, justificou o presidente.
Mas as teorias do presidente boliviano não se ficaram por aqui. Para Morales, o abuso da utilização de recipientes e embalagens em plástico para preservar melhor os alimentos e o consumo de alimentos geneticamente modificados provocam calvície. “A calvície parece ser uma doença normal na Europa, onde a maioria dos homens são carecas”, ao contrário dos indígenas. “Isso deve-se às coisas que eles comem. Os povos indígenas não são carecas, porque comem outras coisas.”
Morales falava durante a Conferência Mundial dos Povos sobre as Alterações Climáticas, que se realizava na cidade de Tiquipaya, onde o público respondeu com aplausos e gargalhadas. O chefe de Estado da Bolívia deixou de lado o guião do discurso de inauguração que estava previsto para atacar o público com “vivências e experiências” que o convenceram de que o capitalismo deve desaparecer da Terra, por ser o principal culpado pelo desastre que o planeta enfrenta.
O capitalismo está a levar a humanidade à beira de “um planeta morte”, afirmou o presidente que enunciou os culpados: as quintas de frangos industriais, as batatas holandesas, as embalagens de plástico e, claro, a Coca-Cola.
